This I Believe
What I believe and why?
What goes around
comes around
I believe in not scaring my sister, because what goes
around comes around.
All was calm, except for the lady in the street screaming for help. It all started around 3:30 at night. “HEEELLLP”! “HEEELLLP”! Immediately the house lights were on, the neighbors were up and the police were on their way. The agonizing screaming continued, coming and going from time to time. The consistencies of the screams were unrealistically similar. Tone, pitch all seemed the same. But no one noticed. The screaming continued through the night, peculiarly until the police showed up. At which point they told my family that the screaming was nothing more than a mountain lion in heat. Laughing, I went back to bed; in fact we all did that night, except for my sister who seemed to still be a little spooked. Come morning, everyone seemed a little uneasy, stumbling out of bed my sister came to the kitchen, eyes red. Asking her what was wrong she said, “Nothing” and proceeded to eat her bowl of cereal. Deciding to go on a run, she left, at which point I decided to look up ‘mountain lion in heat’noises for my sister as a little surprise for when she returned home.
I believe in not scaring my sister. As soon as my sister came home she went to take a shower, to freshen up for the day. Coming out of her room I proceeded with small talk, iPhone behind my back, thumb on the play button. “HEEELLLP”! The phone let out the loudest scream, “HEEELLLP”! Eyes wide, my sister drops to the floor like a ton of bricks. Hands on her eyes she runs into the other room where my mom is sitting.
I believe in what goes around comes around. Later that day, trying to make up for the heart-attack I gave my sister I offer to go on a walk with her. Hesitantly, she accepts and the walk begins. Going up on the trail we decide to take the path less traveled-a deer trail. Over the stones and down the hill we travel, until I make the dumbest step of my life. Flip flops,
right into a hole full of bees. Screaming, I kick off my flop and run down the hill. Carly still at the top, makes her way down with ease, passing me and with the slight tilt of the head said, “Karma”
“What goes around comes around” does not always have to involve a wrong being committed, but can also involve a good deed being repaid in the subconscious mindset. To say what goes around comes around is basically just admitting to yourself that you did something good or bad and that is what you get in return without the other person necessarily being involved. I have learned that either way your belief on “what goes around comes around” is pointed; you will get what you deserve in the end.
Project Reflection
The goal of this project was to find a belief that we truly believe in, and to write a “This I believe essay”on it. We first had to prepare ourselves to find this belief. We participated in class assignments that fed our minds and gave us inspiration to
work. One of our first assignments was the credo assignment, with which we were told write down our top three beliefs and to come up with a personal experience or story that best illustrates those beliefs. We were then told to write our essay with a voice that shows the reader that we can clearly articulate around the point we were trying to get at, and to keep all the points being made to revolve around one central idea. To tie everything together we were shown how to cohere all of our writing together for one smooth flowing paper.
When I brainstormed for my essay I had writers block. I couldn’t think or write for that matter. I was having trouble staying on topic and very simply I was getting frustrated. I tried to write about death and religion, and how the two are tied together but that was a bust. Then I tried to write about happiness and how it can cure all your aliments but again I came to a road block. Then, on a whim I decided to ask my sister for help and sure enough she came through for me. Giving me several
ideas, one jumped out at me; what goes around comes around. At this point I realized that I don’t always have to be reliable for coming up with an idea as long as I can expand on it in my own individual way. If I advocate and persevere for myself, a lot can become of it and I need to do it more often.
This essay really showed me that I can achieve substantial achievements (in comparison with my other attempts) in short amounts of time. In particular, one of the last paragraphs of my essay really draws my ideas together. “To say what goes around comes around is basically just admitting to yourself that you did something good or bad and that is what you get in return without the other person necessarily being involved.” I feel that my essay is a good example of my belief; ‘What goes
around comes around’,and can be used to demonstrate as such.
I feel that my essay could be refined further with emphasis on connecting my belief with my story. While I did do this, I could have been more consistent with making that connection in the first place, enabling my reader to have an easier time piecing the parts of my essay together as they read along. I have not yet decided whether or not I am going to publish my paper on NPR, but if I decide to do so I will need to go back over it to check for grammar, spelling, authentic voice, communal relevance and narrative coherence. If I do these things my essay should be up to par with the requirements required for publishing it on NPR.
Over the past two weeks my thinking has changed dramatically. No longer am I just writing down what immediately pops into my head, but I am thinking; ‘Does this make sense? Am I on topic? What can I add to this?’ and it is helping me. I have also gained a new perspective on my classmates. Not only do I now know what their beliefs are, but I know who is a good writer in case I could use some help on my future writing assignments. This essay has really opened my eyes and made me think deeper and connect to the text more than I ever have before.
